Company with pride and tradition

Destiladora Azteca de Jalisco's recently planted agave fields in the outskirts of Tequila.

Jamie Orendain, one of the two brothers owning Tequila Arette de Jalisco, is a very proud president of the company with an eye for quality. The very first time we met Jaime he guided us around their agave fields in the outskirts of the city Tequila where Jamie showed us the full lifecycle of the agave plant in different stages. We were shown everything from just planted agave with the heart the size of a fist, to agave ready to be harvested with the stem the size of a beach ball. Jamie has an eye for details, well aware that details are of great importance when making good tequila. But then Jaime belongs to one of the families that have meant a lot to the city of Tequila and the tequila industry. His father owns one of the biggest and oldest distilleries; Casa Orendain. Jaime’s brother, Eduardo who is the second owner of the distillery has got another career on the side. Not only has he been the major of the city Tequila, he has also been the chairman in Camera Nacional de la Industria Tequila and is now the president of the Chamber of Commerce in Jalisco.

Modern technology, still handcrafted

The distillery, El Llano, was Casa Orendain’s first, and traces all the way back to 1926. It isn’t very big, but it’s beautifully placed in the city centre. Modern technology such as autoclaves is used to preserve the agave aromas and to create tequila with a special touch. Though they use this modern technique much of the production is done by hand, such as bottling and labelling.

Strong focus on high-quality Tequila 100 % Agave

Even though most distilleries mainly produce tequila mixto, the ambition is usually to produce some tequila 100% agave. But Tequila Arette de Jalisco is different; their focus is strictly on high quality tequila 100 % agave. Though it is a small distillery it is also one of the most market-orientated distilleries in Mexico. It is obvious that Tequila Arette de Jalisco has been inspired by Scottish whisky-producers in the way that they present their products. The bottles and the labels look as if they were meant for a whisky bottle, and so does the more subtle presentation. This distillery is also one of the very few tequila houses to have created a single-barrel tequila, Arette Gran Clase. Both Gran Clase and their Arette Unique (aged for 6 years in three different types of barrels) are produced in very small quantities, twenty and five barrels a year respectively.

True to it’s origin

The tequila made in El Llano has got the true characteristics of the best tequila from the city of Tequila. It’s got the aromas of herbs and citrus to characterize tequila from the lowlands, which you can especially tell with the un-aged ones. Apart from the two products already mentioned, there are two product lines - the baseline Arette and the more exclusive Arette Suave. Arette Suave Blanco is kept in steel tanks for six months before it is bottled, which makes it both smooth and elegant.

ARETTE UNIQUE

Segment: Ultra Premium

Category: Tequila 100 % Agave

Types: Extra Añejo

"Arette Unique is very limited tequila; only 1000 litres can be produced a year. A soft entry leads to a sweet and fruity nose with medium body. Aromas of pepper, cedar wood, vanilla and a certain hint of spices. Finishes with chocolate, spices and a breath of heat. A very seductive tequila that has kept its agave origin even though it is aged over a very long time."
